PIRATES FINISH PERFECT IN REGION WITH BRADWELL BLOWOUT

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High Pirates finished out their regular-season schedule with a 43-12 thumping of the Bradwell Institute Tigers up in Hinesville on Friday night. With the road win at the recently-renovated Olvey Field, the Pirates ran their record to 9-1 for the season and a perfect 8-0 in Region 1-AAAAA. The victory was the ninth in a row for the eighth-ranked Pirates who have only lost their season-opener to Camden County. The Pirates wrapped up the region title last week with their win at South Effingham. The championship is the third for the Pirates in four seasons. BHS went unbeaten through the region schedule again as well with the victory over the Tigers. Brunswick had perfect regular-season records in both 2021 and 2022 when the Pirates won region titles. Also on Friday, the Pirates set a new school-record for most points scored in the regular season. They needed 43 points to break the old mark of 459 set by the 1999 Brunswick team that played for the Class AAAA state crown that season. This year’s team scored 460 points over its 10-game season schedule. The Pirates will now move into the Class AAAAA state playoffs. As the top seed from the region, BHS will be at home in the first round next week against Villa Rica. Brunswick opened up a 29-0 lead in the first half against Bradwell before going to the locker room for intermission with a 29-6 advantage. Josiah Gibbons scored three touchdowns for the Pirates in the victory. He had two rushing scores before taking a screen pass into the end zone for the final BHS touchdown in the game. Jamarious Towns scored on a 16-yard run for the Pirates in the first half. In the second half, Nigel Gardner scored on a 7-yard run for BHS and Heze Kent also caught a touchdown pass. Bradwell finishes its season 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the region.
