Game Preview
Brunswick High is set to return to action for the first time since defeating Glynn Academy in the annual City Championship Game on Sept. 30.
The Pirates won that game 49-7 after opening up a 42-0 advantage with a huge first half. The win over the Red Terrors was the fourth in the last five meetings in the crosstown rivalry for the Pirates.
The win also was a Region 1-AAAAA counter and gave the Pirates their fifth straight victory since dropping the season-opening game at home to Camden County.
Brunswick sits atop the region standings with a perfect record with four league games left including Friday’s meeting between the bricks with the Blue Devils who are back in the region after playing down a classification the last two years.
BHS, which is ranked ninth in the state, and Lakeside-Evans are the only two unbeaten teams remaining in the region. The Pirates have played one more region game than the Panthers who are unbeaten overall with a 5-0 season record.
BHS and Lakeside are scheduled to face off next Friday night at GC Stadium. The Panthers are slated to take on Augusta-area rival Greenbrier on Thursday night before playing a makeup game against Effingham on Monday.
Brunswick remains one of the highest-scoring teams in Class AAAAA as it averages 41.7 points per game. That currently puts the Pirates fifth in scoring in Class AAAAA. Lee County leads the class with its 51.7 scoring average.
The Pirates are giving up 18.8 points a game. BHS has not given up more than 20 points in any single game, however, since giving up the 51 points to Camden in the opening game.
Senior running back William Heck leads a strong Brunswick ground attack as he averages 133 yards per game rushing.
Junior quarterback Grant Moore has thrown for 1,057 yards and 12 touchdowns with two interceptions in Brunswick’s first six games.
BHS and Statesboro last played in 2021 with the Pirates winning 21-0 in Statesboro.
The Blue Devils have not played since defeating Bradwell Institute 41-36 at home on Sept. 20 for their first region victory after dropping their first two league games.
They opened region play with a 43-14 loss at Greenbrier on Sept. 6 before falling at home to Glynn Academy 21-20 the next week.
Of course, Brunswick knocked off Greenbrier 21-14 on the road after falling behind 14-0 early.
In their loss to Glynn, the Blue Devils led 6-0 at halftime and saw the Terrors surge ahead 21-6 before they rallied to pull within the 21-20 score. Statesboro lined up to go for two points and a possible win in the closing moments, but had a procedure penalty before they could run a play.
The Blue Devils then elected to kick the extra-point to tie the game, but missed the kick.
Statesboro starts freshman Beckham Jarrard at quarterback. He has passed for 833 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions in the team’s five games.
