PIRATES PREVAIL AT GREENBRIER

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High Pirates rallied from behind to deck Greenbrier Friday night in Evans. Down 14-0 early in the game, Brunswick kept the Wolfpack off the scoreboard the rest of the night and would pull out a 21-14 victory in the Region 1-AAAAA game in front of a raucous home crowd that liked the start it saw from its team. BHS, ranked ninth in the state, improved to 4-1 with the win and went to 3-0 in the region. The Pirates and Lakeside-Evans are the only two teams in the league still undefeated after the first three weeks of region games. Greenbrier is now 2-2 after the loss. The Wolfpack, rebuilding under a new head coach, had beaten Statesboro 43-14 two weeks ago to open region play. The Wolfpack had an open date last week, and with two weeks to prepare for the Pirates, Greenbrier was ready to go at kickoff. With the large crowd in the stands behind them, the Wolfpack scored on their first possession after receiving the opening kick. Greenbrier would force the Pirates to punt on their first possession. It was the first time BHS had punted since its second game at Wayne County. The home squad drove for a second touchdown on a 33-yard pass play that quickly made it 14-0. Now facing their largest deficit since trailing Camden County by 16 points in their opening game, the Pirates got down to business. BHS would grind out an 80-yard scoring drive on its second offensive series on which it converted twice on fourth down. The Pirates scored on a 12-yard pass from Grant Moore to Waseem Murray. The extra-point try was no good, so the score remained 14-6. That was also the halftime score. Greenbrier missed a 35-yard field goal try in the second quarter and also couldn’t capitalize on an interception inside Brunswick territorybefore the end of the opening half. The Pirates would tie the score right away in the third quarter. Receiving the second-half kick, they marched down the field and scored on a 33-yard scamper by Nigel Gardner. KJ Richardson ran for two points to draw the Pirates even at 14-all. Brunswick got the ball right back when it recovered the ensuing kick at the Greenbrier 29-yard line. The Pirates threatened to take their first lead on their next series, but junior tight end Heze Kent was ruled out of bounds on a touchdown catch on a fourth-down play which ended the Brunswick threat. It looked like the Pirates also had taken the lead on Greenbrier’s first offensive series of the second half midway through the third period when it returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown. But the Pirates were flagged for defensive pass interference, wiping away the score and allowing the Wolfpack to keep possession. Brunswick ended up forcing a punt by Greenbrier and regained possession at its own 14 with the game now in the fourth quarter. The Pirates then mounted their biggest drive of the season to go in front for the first time, running the ball 10 straight times to cover the 86 yards. The last run covered 21 yards by Josiah Gibbons for the go-ahead touchdown. Following the PAT, BHS was finally ahead 21-14 with 7:41 left to play. Greenbrier would drive inside Brunswick’s 20-yard line when it got the ball back, but facing a fourth down with just over four minutes left, the home team elected to attempt a field goal that was off the mark. Brunswick took over and kept the ball away from Greenbrier as it ran out the clock to finish off another road win in the region. Brunswick won at Effingham to begin region play on Sept. 6 before winning big at home over Evans last week. The Pirates will face rival Glynn Academy next Friday in the annual City Championship game. The Terrors lost Friday at home to Lakeside-Evans by a 28-14 final tally for their first region loss after winning their first two league contests.
