The Pirates jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter and led 21-6 at halftime. Effingham pulled within 21-13 early in the third quarter, but Brunswick answered immediately with a touchdown for a 28-13 lead and controlled the game the rest of the way. BHS totaled more than 500 yards in the win including 385 rushing yards against a Rebels defense that has yielded 40-plus points in each of its first three games - all losses as Effingham is winless after three games to start the season. Senior running back William Heck ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns for the Pirates and also caught a touchdown pass while Nigel Gardner ripped off a 91-yard TD jaunt in the first half for the Pirates. Effingham defeated BHS last season by three points in the final game of the regular season in Springfield to claim the outright region title. Brunswick had beaten the Rebels in the final game of the season the previous two years by three points both times to claim the 2021 and 2022 league titles. The Pirates entered the Class 5A state rankings at No. 10 with Friday’s victory over the Rebels and became the favorite for this year’s region championship. Friday’s game against Evans will be the first for the Pirates at home since their season opener against Camden County, a game BHS dropped 51-41. This week’s game is also the Homecoming contest for BHS. The Pirates are 4-0 all-time against Evans which also visited GC Stadium last year and fell to Brunswick 35-7. The Knights dropped their league opener at home last week 21-0 to Augusta rival Lakeside-Evans. Evans allowed Lakeside quarterback Ty Jones to pile up 343 all-purpose yards including 213 yards from scrimmage in the first half as the Panthers took charge of the game. The Knights could muster only 31 yards of offense before halftime. The Evans offensive line features 4-star prospect Mason Short who is committed to Georgia. He had been committed to Alabama, but de-committed last January following the retirement of former Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. Short committed to the Bulldogs in April.
