PIRATES SAIL PAST WAYNE COUNTY, 49-7

The Brunswick High Pirates blew out Wayne County Friday night as the Pirates clicked to a 49-7 victory over the Yellow Jackets at Jaycee Stadium in Jesup. Brunswick led only 15-7 at halftime, but the Pirates turned this one into rout after the intermission break as they scored the final 34 points in this non-region meeting. The Pirates are now 1-1 on the young season as they quickly rebounded from last week’s 51-41 loss to Camden County in the season opener at Glynn County Stadium. This was the second game at home for the Jackets to start the season. They lost last week on their own field by a 16-10 final score to Glynn Academy. Brunswick and Wayne had not met since the 2017 season. The BHS defense led this victory over the Jackets. The Pirates scored twice on interception returns in the second half and forced repeated turnovers by the Wayne offense over the final two quarters. Last week, the Pirates gave up three touchdowns in the second quarter when Camden went a combined 12 yards for those scores after mishaps by the BHS punt team. A 14-10 Brunswick lead turned into a 30-14 lead for Camden at halftime. The Pirates only had to punt once Friday in Jesup, but the punt team executed from snap to kick as planned. Also in the opener, the Pirates gave up a kickoff return for a touchdown, but their kick coverage was better against Wayne, according to other published reports on the game. Brunswick will now have next week off before swinging into Region 1-AAAAA action at Effingham on Sept. 6. The Rebels are the defending league champions from old Region 2-AAAAAA. Brunswick went to the state playoffs as the No. 3 seed from the region last year after winning the league the two previous seasons.
