Game Preview
Brunswick High and Wayne County will both be looking for their first victories in the 2004 season when they face off Friday night in their second games of the season.
The Pirates lost 51-41 to Camden County at Glynn County Stadium last week in their season opener while seeing their two-game win streak against the Wildcats come to a halt.
The Yellow Jackets also lost at home last week, falling 16-10 to Glynn Academy to kick off their season.
BHS and Wayne have not played since 2016 when the Pirates won in Brunswick.
The Pirates displayed an explosive offense last week against Camden as they gained more than 400 yards in the loss.
The Pirates showed they could score quickly, too. Their opening drive covered 77 yards in four plays and finished in Camden’s end zone. In the second half, BHS went 75 yards to score in six plays to begin the third quarter and went 70 yards in two plays for a touchdown on its second possession.
Also in the third period, the Pirates needed only six plays to find paydirt from 68 yards.
BHS gave up three straight touchdowns, though, which resulted from special teams mishaps in the second quarter. The Wildcats only had to go a combined 12 yards for those three scores.
Camden also returned a kickoff 88 yards for its first touchdown after halftime after the Pirates drove for the fast score after receiving the second-half kick.
In their opener last week, the Jackets failed to score an offensive touchdown against Glynn. Their lone touchdown of the night came on a scoop-and-score by the defense.
Wayne trailed the Red Terrors 8-7 at halftime and took a 10-8 lead in the third quarter with a field goal. The Terrors scored their second touchdown of the game late in the third quarter to regain the lead.
The Jackets are rebuilding under new head coach John Mohring who previously served as head coach at Savannah Country Day. He took over the Wayne program early this year following the departure of former head coach Jaybo Shaw who bolted to become head coach at a South Carolina high school.
Wayne’s best player is senior linebacker Tavion Wallace, a four-star prospect who is committed to Arkansas.
