BRUNSWICK SET TO BATTLE CAMDEN IN OPENING GAME

Kickoff: A look at Brunswick High’s opening game: Opponent: Camden County When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium Records: BHS 0-0, 0-0 Region 1-AAAAA; CC 0-0, 0-0 Region 1-AAAAAA Last year: BHS won 21-17 in Kingsland All-time: CC leads overall 26-13-1 Game Preview The Pirates and Wildcats will clash once again Friday night at Glynn County Stadium in an attractive opening-night matchup. Brunswick has won the last two meetings between the rivals. BHS jumped ahead last year from the get-go and held on for the win. Two years ago, Brunswick’s defense made a late stand to deny a comeback-bid by the Wildcats. Coaching legend Jeff Herron was the head coach for Camden in both of those games, but Herron announced his retirement after 32 seasons in late January. He won well over 300 games and is the only coach in state history to lead three different programs to state championships. The Wildcats hired Travis Roland to take over the program. He will be making his debut in Georgia Friday night between the bricks after taking Mainland High out of Daytona Beach, Fla., to a state championship last year. Mainland topped St. Augustine, a team that defeated BHS it the Border War last year, for the state crown. The Wildcats are running a spread offense under Roland. It will feature the top tight end in the country, senior Elyiss Williams, who was Camden’s top receiver last year in the team’s Wing-T offense. Williams is 6-foot-7 and weighs 235 pounds. He is committed to the University of Georgia and is expected to sign with the Bulldogs in December. Brunswick is deep at running back on offense. It’s backfield corps includes returning starters William Heck and Jamarious Towns, both seniors this year. The Pirates also have their own big-time tight end. Junior Heze Kent, who is 6-6 and 240 pounds, is a four-star recruit who Brunswick will as a blocker, receiver and runner. He has received Power 4 offers galore and has narrowed his list of schools down to seven going into the season. Friday’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
