PIRATES HOSTING EVANS FOR FINAL REGULAR-SEASON HOME GAME

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Kickoff A look at Brunswick High’s next game: Opponent: Evans When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium Radio/Video Stream: 107.7 FM; Records: BHS 5-2 overall, 3-1 Region 2-AAAAAA; EH 3-5, 2-2 Last week: BHS won 38-14 over South Effingham at home; Evans lost 22-14 to Glynn Academy at home. Last year/All-time: BHS won 28-7 at Evans; BHS leads 3-0 in all-time series. Game Preview: This will be the final home game of the regular season for the Pirates. Brunswick needs a victory to stay a game back of Effingham in the region standings, assuming the Rebels win Friday at home against Lakeside-Evans. The Pirates and Rebels are scheduled to play next Friday in Springfield to close out the regular season. Glynn Academy is also tied with the Pirates for second in the region standings with one league loss. The Red Terrors have a bye this week and are scheduled to close the season next Friday at home versus Lakeside-Evans. If the Pirates were to win this week and also next Friday at Effingham, there would be a three-way tie atop the region standings between BHS, Effingham and Glynn, assuming the Terrors were to defeat Lakeside-Evans next Friday as well. With Glynn beating Brunswick in the head-to-head meeting, Effingham beating Glynn and Brunswick then beating Effingham to create this scenario, the head-to-head tiebreaker to determine the top seed for the state playoffs could not be used. Thus, the tiebreaking procedures the region voted to put in place would be used to determine seeding. Those will be laid out in further detail prior to next week. Evans is currently fourth in the league standings with two league losses, Lakeside-Evans and South Effingham have three and Grovetown has lost all five of its region games. Last Friday, Evans led Glynn 7-3 at halftime at home before the Terrors came from behind in the second half to pull out a 22-14 win. Still, the Terrors led just 9-7 going into the fourth quarter before opening up a 22-7 lead in the final period. The Knights are primarily a running teamwith a solid offensive front and senior running back Rayshaun King who averages 10.3 yards rushing a game. King has carried 129 times this season for 834 yards and five touchdowns. Evans junior tackle Mason Short committed to Alabama this past spring after also considering offers from Georgia, Ohio Stte and others. He is a four-star prospect according to 247Sports. Short is 6-foot-7 and 280 pounds, so he is actually rather tall and large. The Knights average 26.38 points per game and allow 16.88. Brunswick remains in the top 10 in scoring offense in Class AAAAAA as the Pirates average 37.14 points a game. They give up 17.14 per game. The Pirates changed starters at quarterback last week going with sophomore Grant Moore who went the whole game against South Effingham. Terry Mitchell, a senior, is the Pirates’ top pass-catcher. He has 39 receptions for 818 yards and 8 touchdowns for the season. Mitchell averages 116.9 receiving yards a game. Junior running backs Jamarious Towns and William Heck have both carried for more than 400 yards. For the BHS defense, Devin Smith, senior linebacker and Kentucky commit, has nine sacks. Fellow senior linebacker Mike Daniels averages 7.7 tackles, junior linebacker J’Shawn Towns averages 7.5 and senior defensive lineman River Creel averages 7.3.
