BHS hosts South Effingham to begin season's home stretch

BHS HOSTS SOUTH EFFINGHAM TO BEGIN SEASON'S HOME STRETCH

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Kickoff A look at Brunswick High’s next game: Opponent: South Effingham When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium Radio/Video Stream: 107.7 FM; Records: BHS 4-2 overall, 2-1 Region 2-AAAAAA; SE 5-2, 1-2 Last week: BHS did not play; SE won 22-19 at Lakeside-Evans Last year/All-time: BHS won 42-3; BHS leads overall series 8-1 Game Preview: The Pirates will enter the home stretch of the regular season after having an open week last week. The last time the Pirates played they clicked to a 46-22 win at Lakeside Evans two Fridays ago. Brunswick is set to finish the season with Region 2-AAAAAA games against South Effingham, Evans and Effingham in the next three weeks. The Pirates have that one region loss to Glynn in the City Championship Game. BHS, Glynn and Evans all have one loss in region play while Effingham is currently unbeaten at 4-0. Effingham pounded South Effingham 42-7 on Sept. 22, the same night the Pirates and Terrors collided in their annual rivalry game. That was the first loss for the Mustangs after three straight wins to open the season against Vidalia (21-15), Islands (35-0) and Bradwell Institute (52-36). Remember, the Pirates blanked Islands 63-0 prior to taking on Glynn the next week. Islands is 0-8 on the season. Glynn decked South Effingham 35-0 in Brunswick on Oct. 6 to give the Mustangs their second loss of the season, and of course both losses came in region games. The Mustangs won their first league game last Friday at Lakeside-Evans as they pulled out a 22-19 victory. This is South Effingham’s first season under head coach Loren Purvis. He came from Morgan County where he was working as the school’s offensive coordinator, but Purvis had previously been South Effingham’s offensive coordinator under former head coach Nathan Clark who resigned after last season. The Pirates are averaging 37 points a game to rank 10th in scoring in Class AAAAAA coming into this week. Roswell currently leads Class AAAAAA in scoring as it averages 52 points a game. Calvary Day, located in Savannah, currently leads all state classifications, with 52.7 points a game. Calvary Day is ranked No. 1 in Class AAA at the moment with a 7-0 record.
