Brunswick High started a bit slow Friday night at Lakeside-Evans, but once the Pirates warmed up, they ran away from the home team and won 46-22 over the Panthers.
The Pirates surrendered touchdowns to the Panthers on their first two series and trailed 15-7 after the opening quarter.
But Brunswick would score the next 36 points to take command of the Region 2-AAAAAA game.
The Pirates tied the score at 15-15 early in the second stanza on a two-point conversion run by Jamarious Towns. That followed a 42-yard touchdown pass from receiver Daron Monroe to tight end Heze Kent.
BHS took its first lead after that on a 7-yard keeper by senior quarterback J.R. Elkins. The Pirates went ahead 29-15 before halftime on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Grant Moore to Heze Kent.
In the third quarter, Moore threw his third TD pass of the night to Monroe to give Brunswick a 36-15 advantage. The scoring play covered 34 yards.
Also in the third period, Elkins hooked up with Terry Mitchell for a 55-yard scoring pass that gave BHS a 42-15 lead going to the final quarter.
The Panthers finally scored again early in the fourth, but BHS close the night’s scoring with a late 20-yard field goal by McClain Finneran.
Lakeside (2-4 overall, 0-2 region,) has lost three in a row including its first two region games. The Panthers fell 16-15 last week to Evans to begin their region schedule.
Brunswick improved to 4-2 with the win and 2-1 in the region.
The Pirates have an open week next week and will return to action at home on Oct. 20 against South Effingham in a region game. The Mustangs lost 35-0 to Glynn Academy at GC Stadiium on Friday.
