By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Kickoff A look at Brunswick High’s next game: Opponent: Islands High School When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium Radio: 107.7 FM Records: BHS 2-0, IHS 0-4 Last week: BHS lost 45-35 to St. Augustine (Fla.), IHS lost 21-7 to Windsor Forest Last year/All-time: BHS won 49-0; BHS leads overall series 2-0 Game Preview: This is the annual Homecoming game for Brunswick, and the Pirates are heavy favorites. Brunswick has been installed as a 42-point favorite by the weekly Maxwell Ratings. The Pirates have only played two games and are 1-1 on the season. They defeated Camden County 21-17 in their season opener back on Aug. 25 in Kingsland and fell 45-35 last Saturday at home to St. Augustine (Fla.) in the second Border Classic at Glynn County Stadium. That setback ended a 23-game regular-season winning streak by the Pirates that dated back to the 2020 season. BHS went a perfect 10-0 in the regular season the last two years. For Brunswick, senior receiver Terry Mitchell caught a touchdown pass in each of the first two games. He had seven receptions for 114 yards in last week’s loss to St. Augustine. Brunswick has faced Islands the last two seasons at home. Two years ago, the Pirates blasted the Sharks 41-6 on a rainy night in Brunswick. Last year, BHS blanked Islands 49-0 at GC Stadium. Islands is a school in the Chatham County school district. The Sharks are struggling in 2023 as they are off to an 0-4 start with losses to Calvary Day School (49-8), Savannah Christain (56-14), South Effingham (35-0) and Windsor Forest (21-7). Calvary is ranked No. 2 in Class AAA while Savannah Christian is ranked No. 6.. South Effingham competes in Region 2-AAAAA with the Pirates and is off to a 3-0 start while Windsor Forest is 2-2. Islands is averaging 158.5 yards per game passing, but is struggling to run the ball when you count negative-yardage plays. They are averaging minus-28.8 yards a game on the ground.
