Game Preview: Brunswick will be looking to win a second straight year in the Border Classic on its home field.
The Pirates defeated Bolles last year in the Friday night game by a score of 20-3 on its way to an unbeaten regular season.
Coffee knocked off St. Augustine last year in the inaugural event, winning a Saturday afternoon game by 34-14.
On Friday night, Coffee took on Bolles and toppled the Bulldogs 17-9.
St. Augustine and Bolles met in the season opener for both teams back on Aug. 25 and the Yellow Jackets won 43-36.
This will only be the second game for both the Jackets and the Pirates. Brunswick also opened its 2023 season on Aug. 25 with a 21-17 victory at Camden County.
Brunswick was scheduled to host Winter Park (Fla.) last Thursday, but the game was canceled by the storm that passed through the area mid-week last week. Glynn County Schools officials made attempts to reschedule the game for Friday or Saturday, but Winter Park could not work out internal conflicts and the game will not be made up.
The Pirates started fast in their game at Camden, scoring on their first two possessions of the night. They led 21-14 at intermission. The Wildcats scored the only points of the second half on a field goal early in the fourth quarter to pull within the 21-17 final tally.
Brunswick had a chance to put away the game with just over two minutes to go, but lost a fumble inside Camden’s 5-yard line. The BHS defense had to make one last stop and picked off a pass near midfield to finish off the Wildcats.
The Pirates extended their regular-season winning streak to 23 games with the victory.
Players to watch for the Pirates include senior quarterback J.R. Elkins and senior wideout Terry Mitchell. They hooked up for a touchdown in the first quarter against Camden.
Others to watch on the BHS offense include junior running backs Jamarious Towns and William Heck and sophomore tight end Heze Kent who scored two rushing touchdowns for the Pirates at Camden.
Brunswick’s defense is led by senior linebacker Devin Smith, a highly-regarded recruit who has narrowed his college choices to Kentucky and LSU, according to a post on his X account (formerly Twitter) earlier this week.
The Jackets have a few major-college prospects, too. Their quarterback, junior Locklan Hewlett, is committed to Wake Forerst. He threw for 2,126 yards and 23 touchdowns last season as a sophomore.
Devonte Lyons is also a three-star running back for the Jackets. He ran for 1,269 yards last season while scoring 16 touchdowns. He has close to 20 offers from the likes of Miami, Boston College, Central Florida and West Virginia among others.
