PIRATES SET FOR OPENER AT CAMDEN

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Kickoff A look at Brunswick High’s opening game: Opponent: Camden County When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland Radio: 107.7 FM Records: BHS 0-0, CC 1-0 Last week: BHS did not play; CC defeated Columbia, 23-12. Last year/All-time: BHS won 16-10 at Glynn County Stadium. Camden leads the overall series 26-12-1. Game Preview: This will be the first game of the 2023 season for the Pirates who were originally supposed to open the season last week against Andrew Jackson, but the Jacksonville school had to pull out of the game due to new rules put in place by its state governing body. Brunswick was able to pick up another game which will be played next week when Winter Park (Fla.) visits Glynn County Stadium to take on the Pirates in their home opener. That will be a Thursday night game. Camden actually will make the short trip to Brunswick next Friday to face Glynn Academy. The Wildcats kicked off their new season last Friday at home with a 23-12 win over Columbia which had upset Camden 13-10 in last year’s season opener for both teams in Kingsland. The teams also played in Camden to begin the 2021 campain with the Wildcats throttling the Eagles 31-0. The Wildcats trailed last week’s opener 6-0 at halftime. Camden head coach Jeff Herron recorded his 300th career victory in Georgia with last week’s win. Herron is 325-65 all-time in 32 seasons as a head coach. He spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons at T.L. Hanna in South Carolina where he went 25-2 and won a pair of region titles. Herron is in the third year of his second stint at Camden. He first coached the Wildcats from 2000-20012 when he won region titles in all but his first season and also led the program to state championships in 2003, 2008 and 2009. Herron won his first state crown as a head coach in 1999 at Oconee County on the night before BHS played Lowndes for the Class AAAA state title. Herron came to Camden the next season. He also won a state championship at Grayson in 2016, his only season with the metro Atlanta power. Last year, Camden won its first state playoff game since 2015 when the Wildcats defeated East Coweta at home in the first round before falling at Grayson in round two. After falling to BHS in Week 2 to start 0-2 last year, Camden won all but one of its remaining eight regular-season games including its final two against Valdosta and Lowndes to lock down the No. 2 seed out of Region 1-AAAAAAA. Last week, senior running back Jaden Dailey led Camden with 140 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats played two quarterbacks in the opener but only threw seven passes. Two of those were caught by 6-foot-8 tight end Elyiss Williams who transferred to Camden from Charlton County prior to spring practice. He had 60 yards receiving in the opener including a 30-yard TD catch. Williams is committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. He also is an edge rusher on defense. BHS is beginning its second season under head coach Garrett Grady. Last fall, the Pirates won a second straight Region 3-AAAAAA title while going a perfect 10-0 in the regular season for a second straight season. They suffered a tough 29-28 loss at home to Houston County in the first round of the state playoffs when Houston converted a two-point play in overtime. BHS has won 22 straight regular-season games. The Pirates last beat Camden in Kingsland in 2017 and have not played the Wildcats at Gilman Stadium since 2019 when they lost 48-20. Brunswick was 0-7 versus a Herron-coached Camden team until last year’s win over the Wildcats.
