BHS BASKETBALL TEAMS AT HOME IN STATE GAMES TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High basketball teams are set to play first-round games in the Class AAAAAA state tournaments on back-to-back nights inside Brunswick Square Garden. The Lady Pirates will open the girls state tourney Tuesday with a 6 p.m. home game against Thomas County Central. On Wednesday, the Pirates will take their home court for an opening-round game also at 6 p.m. against Tift County. The BHS girls, ranked fifth in the state, are the top seed from Region 2-AAAAAA after claiming a second straight league championship last Friday night with a 57-31 victory over South Effigham in the league tournament finals held at the Garden. Brunswick (24-3) swept both the region regular-season and tournament titles a second consecutive season. The Lady Pirates were a perfect 12-0 in region action during the season before winning in the semifinals and finals of the tournament to win all 14 games they played against region opponents. The Lady Pirates’ opponent on Tuesday is the fourth-seed from Region 1. Thomas County Central brings a 17-8 overall record into the state tournament after going 5-5 in league action. TCC defeated Northside (Warner Robins) 71-38 in the Region 1 tourney before losing 61-55 to Tift in the semifinals and then falling again to Lee County by 51-50 in the consolation game. Tia Floyd averages 13.9 points to lead Thomas County Central in scoring. Top players for Brunswick include senior forward Shamya Flanders, junior guard Shania Jones and junior guard Jermiyah Ramsey. The Brunsnwick-TCC winner will take on the Woodward Academy-St.Pius X winner in round two. On Wednesday, the Pirates will look to advance to the second round as they host Tift in the first round. Brunswick settled for the No. 2 seed from Region 2 after falling big to Grovetown in the league tourney finals Saturday night at Grovetown. The Warriors, who moved up to third in the state rankings after that win, are the defending state champions. BHS took Grovetown to overtime on Feb. 3 in Brunswick before falling 70-67. The Pirates actually led that game by double-figures in the fourth quarter. The Pirates were ranked 10th going into the region tournament, but dropped out of the rankings after losing in the tournament champioinship. BHS enters the state tourney with a 21-6 record. Camarion Johnson, a senior, is the leading scorer for the Pirates. Freshman Heze Kent is the top rebounder. The Blue Devils are 20-6 coming into Wednesday’s matchup. They went into the Region 1 tourney as the No. 2 seed but lost to Veterans, the third seed, by 38-31 in the semifinals. They rebounded to win the consolation game 54-48 over Houston County to earn the No. 3 seed for state. The Brunswick-Tift winner will play the Jonesboro-South Cobb winner in the second round.
