THURSDAY TAKES: LOCAL WRESTLERS REACH STATE TITLE MATCHES, BHS BOYS WIN IN REGION HOOPS SEMIS

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Glynn Academy and Brunswick High will both have wrestlers going for individual state championships Friday evening in the Class AAAAAA state tournament in Macon. The state tournament began on Thursday at the Macon Centerplex. For BHS, junior Anthony Lowe has wrestled his way into the 215-pound title match on Friday night. Lowe entered the state tournament 47-0 on the season. He placed third in his weight class last year. From Glynn, Phil Cuttino and Cade Morgan are both in the title matches of their respective weight classes, too. Cuttino is competing in the 126-pound division and Morgan is wrestling at 138 pounds. GCS Athletics will have a complete rundown of how the two schools did in the traditional meet later which will include their finishes in the team standings plus how other wrestlers from GA and BHS fared in their individual classes. The matches are being streamed by the NFHS Network. All viewers must pay a small subscription fee which is good for a month and can be continuously renewed or canceled anytime. Also on Thursday in Augusta, the Brunswick High boys basketball team won 59-55 over Lakeside-Evans in the semifinals of the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament being hosted by Grovetown. The Pirates (21-5) will face Grovetown in Saturday’s championship game. BHS is ranked 10th in the state and the Warriors are ranked fifth. Brunswick lost to Grovetown both times they played in the regular season, but BHS led the Warriors by 14 points in the fourth quarter of their game here on Feb. 3 before losing 70-67 in overtime. Grovetown scored the tying basket on a dunk just before the final horn in regulation. The Warriors are the top seed while the Pirates are the No. 2 seed. Brunswick is now assured of playing at home next week in the first round of the state tournament as the region’s champion or runner-up. The semifinal victory over Lakeside-Evans was the third this season for the Pirates over the Augusta school. BHS topped the Panthers in double-overtime the last time they played in Augusta.
