RANKIN TO DOGS, GRAY TO OWLS FOR TRACK AND FIELD

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Riyon Rankin made his college choice official on Wednesday afternoon as the Brunswick High track and field standout signed with the University of Georgia. Rankin won the Class AAAAAA state high-jump championship last spring and will attempt to repeat as the state champion again this spring before going on to compete for the Bulldogs at the collegiate level. He had already verbally committed to the Bulldogs after taking a visit to the school. Rankin, who is currently playing basketball for the Pirates, chose Georgia over Tennessee. Rankin won the state championship by clearing 7-foot-1, height which hadn’t been reached in the state since 2013. He now has his sights set on the national record of 7-6 which was set by Dothel Edwards back in 1983. Rankin mentioned Wednesday that his discussions with Georgia coaches during his visit to Athens included the possibility of him competing in the 2024 Olympics that are slated for Paris. Georgia is a national power in track and field. Also on Wednesday, Brunswick High’s Nick Gray signed with Kennesaw State. The BHS hurdler visited the school in October and received an offer shortly after that visit. Gray also played football for the Pirates but had his senior season cut short when he tore an ACL early in the season. He likely won’t compete in the track season for BHS this spring, either. Gray won the 110-meter hurdles at the Region 2-AAAAAA meet last year. Also in the regular season, he finished that same race in 14.34 seconds, besting the previous school-record time by Justin Coleman who is currently playing in the NFL.
