Game Preview
The Pirates will make the long bus ride to Augusta for the second time this season, and once again it will be for a game not played on a Friday night.
Brunswick made this same trip a month ago to face Grovetown on a Wednesday night the week of Hurricane Ian. The Pirates didn’t know until the day before that they would be going to play that game the next day. BHS won handily as the Pirates prevailed 56-39 over the Warriors.
The 56 points Brunswick put on the scoreboard that night are the most the Pirates have scored in a game this season. However, the 39 points scored by the Warriors are the most the Pirates have also given up this season.
This game against Evans is taking place on a Thursday night due to an officials shortage in the Augusta area which means only a certain number of games can be covered on a Friday night there. Someone has to play on a Thursday, and last week it was Grovetown and Lakeside-Evans that squared off on Thursday night.
The Pirates, of course, are trying to stay perfect on the season as they go for a second straight unbeaten regular season. Brunswick has won 20 games in a row dating back to the 2020 season when it won its final two regular-season games.
Another win would send the Pirates into next Friday’s regular-season finale at home against Effingham with its perfect worksheet in place while playing the Rebels for the Region 2-AAAAAA championship and top seed for the upcoming Class AAAAAA state playoffs. The Rebels are 6-2 overall and 4-0 region going into their game Friday at Lakeside-Evans.
Evans is coming off a loss last week to Glynn Academy at Glynn County Stadium. The Knights led 14-8 at halftime and 22-8 just moments into the third quarter, but Glynn scored the final 17 points of the night to pull out a 25-22 victory which secured a playoff berth for the Red Terrors.
Rayshaun King ran for 191 yards for the Knights including an 80-yard touchdown jaunt on the first offensive play of the third quarter. However, King ran only three more times the rest of the game following his long scoring run.
Last week, the Pirates won 42-3 at South Effingham in a game with a running clock in the second half. J.R. Elkins threw four touchdown passes for the Pirates in the victory and also went over 1,000 yards passing for the season.
Elkins has thrown for 1,182 yards and 16 touchdowns in eight games in his first season at the varsity starter. He is averaging almost 148 yards per game.
BHS has rushed for 1,781 yards and is averaging almost 223 yards a game on the ground.
Brunswick is averaging 38.1 points a game while giving up 12.4.
