BRUNSWICK BLASTS SOUTH EFFINGHAM, 42-3

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High Pirates stayed perfect on the season with a 42-3 pounding of South Effingham Friday night in Guyton. The win moved the Pirates to 8-0 overall and now 4-0 in Region 2-AAAAAA with two games remaining on the season schedule. Brunswick, ranked ninth in the state, will travel to Evans next Thursday before facing off with Effingham on Nov. 4 in the final game of the regular season. Friday’s victory was the 21st in a row in the regular season for BHS which won all 10 of its games on the season ledger last fall after winning its final three regular-season games back in 2020. The Pirates were coming off an open date last week and quickly jumped out to a big lead on the hometown Mustangs, opening up a 28-0 advantage in the first quarter. Brunswick held a 35-0 lead at halftime. The second half was played with a running clock. The loss dropped South Effingham to 3-4, 1-2, but the Mustangs can still finish fourth in the region and make the playoffs. The Mustangs have two games left against league opponents Grovetown and Evans over the next two weeks. The Pirates scored on all six of their full possessions. In the first half, junior quarterback J.R. Elkins threw four touchdown passes for Brunswick. Two of the scoring passes were to Terry Mitchell and two were to Kevin Thomas. The Mustangs avoided the shutout with a 44-yard field goal by Tyler Quick with two minutes remaining. Brunswick defeated South Effingham 56-21 last season.
