PIRATES RACE PAST BRADWELL IN HOMECOMING GAME, 60-14

The Brunswick High Pirates could not be stopped Friday night as they rolled to a 60-14 Homecoming victory over Bradwell Institute at Glynn County Stadium.
The 60 points were the second-most scored by the Pirates this season and the most the team has scored at home as Brunswick improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in Region 1-AAAAA with the blowout of the Tigers.
The Pirates put up 65 points in a shutout of Evans on Sept. 12. That 65-point win was also the largest margin of victory ever by a BHS football team.
Brunswick had scored as much as 42 points twice at home this season, decking Effingham 42-14 on Sept. 5 in the league opener and Greenbrier 42-0 on Sept. 19 before taking on Glynn Academy last week in the City Championship Game.
The Pirates, who came into Friday’s game averaging 43.3 points to rank among the top five in scoring in Class AAAAA, led the Tigers 46-14 at halftime. They scored on all but one possession in the opening half as they lost a fumble on their second offensive series.
The Tigers (2-4, 2-3) scored on two of their first three possessions and led the Pirates 7-6 and then 14-13 late in the first quarter. They obviously couldn’t keep pace with the Pirates, though.
“We distributed the ball well,” said BHS head coach Garrett Grady. “(Quarterback) Grant (Moore) hit receivers all around the field tonight.”
Here’s the rundown for the scoring in the first half:
First Quarter
BHS - Heze Kent 4-yd. run (kick blocked)
BI - Keeve 21-yd. (Daren Dudley kick)
BHS - Waseem Murray 40-yd. pass from Grant Moore (Landon Etheridge kick)
BI - Dewahyne Chatman 17-yd. Pass from Jabarri Felix (Dudley kick)
BHS - Kent 4-yd.run (pass failed)
Second Quarter
BHS - Brody Marshall 21-yd. run (Etheridge kick)
BHS - Isreal Henry 55-yd. pass from Moore (Etheridge kick)
BHS - Josiah Gibbons 46-yd. run (Etheridge kick)
BHS - Dontre’ Butler 34-yd. pass from Moore (Etheridge kick)
With a running clock throughout the second half, the Pirates added scores on their first two possessions in the third quarter before turning the game over to the reserves the rest of the way.
The Pirates started their first two drives in the second half on Bradwell’s side of the field. Following a punt by the Tigers to open the third quarter, BHS quickly scored from the Bradwell 30 as Moore hit Isreal Henry in the left corner of the end zone for his fourth touchdown pass of the night.
Zi’Yan Rankin picked off a pass on Bradwell’s next possession around the Tiger 45 and returned it to the 29 where the Pirates would go on offense again. Junior running back Nigel Gardner carried the ball across the goal line moments later from 26 yards away for a score which was the final score of the night as well for the the Pirates.
When BHS hit the 60-point mark, the Pirates had close to 450 yards of offense.
Moore, who retired for the night in the third quarter, was 9-of-12 passing for 203 yards and the four touchdowns. Henry caught three passes for 94 yards and two scores.
Gardner led the BHS ballcarriers with 119 rushing yards and Gibbons followed with 82.
The Tigers, who put up 51 points last week in a win over Greenbrier, had 130 yards in the opening quarter but only had 32 more yards of offense the rest of the game.
Bradwell’s junior quarterback Jabarri Felix delivered a strike over the middle on the team’s first play of the game to fellow junior Carlito Seeve for a 59-yard gain all the way to the Brunswick 21-yard line.
Three plays later on third-and-10, Camerson Keeve ran for a touchdown to answer Brunswick’s first score.
The Tigers’ second score came on a fourth-down play out of a timeout. Felix hit another junior receiver, Dewahyne Chatman, who was wide open along the BHS sideline for a 17-yard touchdown.
The Pirates would clamp down on the Tigers the rest of the game as the high-scoring BHS continued to pile on the points. The Brunswick defense harassed Felix the rest of the night and actually forced him out of the game shortly after halftime as he was injured when he was sacked deep in Bradwell territory.
“I think really getting to the quarterback was a big thing, putting pressure on him, whether it was through our linebackers or D-line, getting a lot of pressure on him,” Grady said. “He was a heck of an athlete, so I think the biggest thing was just getting pressure on him and forcing some bad throws.
“We had some interceptions, had some sacks, so that really helps get them behind the chains and getting the ball back to our offense.”
Savea played quarterback the rest of the game for the Tigers.
Even with the running clock, it felt like a long game because the clock stopped repeatedly for penalties.
The teams were flagged for more than 150 yards in penalties before halftime alone.
“We had penalty after penalty, whether it was offense or defense, and some of them, I know we have to go back and look to see if there really was a penalty,” Grady said. “But we’ve got to improve in that aspect, playing a clean game.”
BHS will visit Statesboro for a region game next Friday. The Blue Devils (4-2, 3-1) defeated Lakeside-Evans 36-29 on the road Friday night.
