The Brunswick High Pirates recorded their second shutout in a row Friday night with a 42-0 victory over Greenbrier in a Region 1-AAAAA game at Glynn County Stadium.
Just a week ago, the Pirates rolled to a 65-0 victory at Evans while the winning margin was the largest-ever by a BHS football team.
“The defense did a really good job of keeping them from scoring. I’m proud of them and our coaches,” said Brunswick head coach Garrett Grady.
The last time Brunswick recorded back-to-back shutouts was the 1999 season when the Pirates played for the Class AAAA state championship. That season, the Pirates held
their first four opponents scoreless and would post six shutouts in 10 regular-season games.
BHS last blanked two opponents in the 2023 season.
With Friday’s victory, the Pirates (4-1 overall, 3-0 region) have now won four straight since the season-opening loss at Camden County which remains unbeaten on the season.
Counting their 42-14 victory over Effingham to open region play, the Pirates have won their first three league games by a 149-14 combined score.
Last week at Evans, which has scored only 34 points in four games and has been held scoreless twice, the Pirates led 23-0 after the first quarter and 44-0 at halftime, leading to a running clock throughout the second half.
On Friday night, the Pirates took a 21-0 advantage into halftime and would built their lead to 35-0 after three quarters to produce a continuous clock in the final quarter.
“I know the scoreboard doesn’t really show it, but they played us very physical,” Grady said. “Their game plan was to limit our possessions and take a lot of time on their possessions in the first half, and that’s what they did.
“Both sides of them ball for them was really physical. Our guys had to work hard, and they were really focused and executed the game plan.”
BHS only had to go 33 yards the first time it had the ball following a short punt by the Wolfpack (1-3, 0-2) on the game’s opening possession. Senior quarterback Grant Moore rifled a 22-yard pass to Waseem Murray into the end zone for the first score of the night. Landon Etheridge added the point-after kick for a quick 7-0 lead.
Two possessions later, the Pirates scored their second touchdown when Moore went around right end on a keeper, eventually reversing field and diving to reach the ball over the pylon in the left corner for the score and a 14-0 lead late in the opening stanza.
Brunswick went up by the 21-0 score early in the second period when Nigel Gardner weaved through traffic and raced to paydirt from 33 yards out.
Both teams had a turnover in the first half with Moore getting picked off in the end zone on a long pass attempt for the Pirates while Greenbrier lost a fumble in Brunswick territory.
The Wolfpack also were turned away by the BHS defense on its best scoring chance of the game when Beau Polcha went for a big gain to the Brunswick 11. They would advance the ball to the goal line on two rushing plays, but a holding call wiped out the second run.
With the ball back on the 16 after the mark-off for the penalty, two straight passes by the Wolfpack were incomplete, and Greenbrier had to give up the ball on downs.
“The defense did a really good job keeping them (out of the end zone) there,” Grady said. “I know they had a holding call in there, but we did a good job there when our backs were against the wall.”
Brunswick essentially put the game away on its opening possession of the third quarter when Josiah Gibbons took a handoff on the Pirates’ first snap and sped 52 yards to paydirt for a 28-0 lead.
Greenbrier gambled on its first second-half possession, going for a first down on fourth-and-3 on its side of the field and lost yardage, thus giving the ball back to Brunswick at the Wolfpack 35.
BHS lost yardage, too, when Moore was sacked on first down. On the next snap, though, Gardner reeled off a 41-yard touchdown run along the Brunswick sideline, slipping away from a tackle around the 20 and going in from there. The kick by Etheridge made it 35-0 four minutes into the second half.
Brunswick’s final score came early in the fourth when Gibbons rushed for his second TD of the game, going into the end zone from 64 yards away as he ran away from the WolfPack defense along their sideline.
For the game, six Brunswick ballcarriers ran for 316 yards as the Pirates totaled 435 yards in the win.
Gibbons rushed for 127 yards and two TDS on seven carries, Gardner added 97 yards and two touchdowns on five carries and Moore carried five times for 68 yards and a touchdown.
“Nigel and Josiah both had some long runs, and the offensive line, I thought, did a good job. Our receivers are really doing a good job blocking downfield as well,” Grady said.
Through the air, Moore was 11-of-15 for 119 yards with the early touchdown and two interceptions.
Greenbrier finished the night with 212 total yards, all but 2 of their yards coming on the ground as they completed one of eight passing attempts.
The team’s leading rusher was Polcha who gained 107 yards on 14 carries.
The Pirates will now turn their attention to next Friday night’s City Championship Game against Glynn Academy. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the local stadium. Brunswick is the visiting team for this year’s game.
